BRINGING GRIEF SUPPORT RESOURCES TO SCHOOLS

I’ll never forget reading this email:

“We have a family that’s really struggling. They have lost five different family members since March and the kiddos are completely stuck as well as mom. They are asking for help. I’d like to hold her hand to connect her with you…”

I received this note from a local elementary school principal several weeks after we visited the school to introduce Billy’s Place as a resource and to present grief support education for the staff. Because the principal knew he could turn to us, we were able to quickly connect with the family and immediately get them oriented and signed up for several groups.

This principal—just like teachers, guidance counselors and other school staff—are really the first responders for kids and families. They are so crucial to our kiddos, so they are super important to us too!

Ready to meet students & staff at a high school mental health fair

You probably know Billy’s Place for our support groups and events. But, did you know that Billy’s Place also provides grief training, visits at mental health fairs, connects staff with resources, and partners with local schools in any way we can? We are anything but a come-to-us community!

I’m Kaylene Ashbridge, Billy’s Place School Bereavement Liaison. I am a former principal, teacher and school counselor. I have witnessed firsthand the need to support grieving students, school staff, and families.

Kids who are grieving experience a whole range of emotions and behaviors that can make academics and interpersonal relationships more challenging. It’s incredibly tough on the kids, the parents, and the teachers. I’m so thankful Billy’s Place can be that bridge for teachers and school staff so they know they aren’t alone, and we can all be the best support we can for our kids.

In the coming weeks, we will be sharing more on social media about our impact in schools, a fabulous partnership with the New York Life Foundation for the Grief Sensitive Schools Initiative, and more as we gear up for another challenging school year.

And if you know of any other community organizations who would benefit from an introduction to Billy’s Place—please let us know. We always welcome our next opportunity to plant a seed of awareness.
