THIS IS HOPE: CHERISHING THE HAPPY MEMORIES

By: Melody Logan, Director of Programs

This month, the kids were making memory boxes: a place to hold written messages to their loved ones and small cherished possessions.

I noticed Alan was working quietly and intently on his box. He is normally a talkative, rambunctious 8-year-old. But after completing his box, he went and laid on a pillow and hugged our big stuffed elephant.

I asked him how he was feeling today and he said sad: “I miss my dad.”

Then I asked if he wanted to share any of his memories of his dad with me and he lit up.

He began telling me about how he liked working with his dad and going places with him. He said his dad liked tacos and tamales.

When I said, “It sounds like you have some good memories of your dad,” he responded with a big smile.

Even though he was sad, he felt supported. And he loved making a box to keep his memories in. This is HOPE. 💜
