THIS IS HOPE: A CHILD LEADS THE WAY
By Melody Logan, Director of Programs
During opening circle in a recent Traumatic Loss Group, several of the kids passed the rain stick on to the next person, choosing not to take their turn to share their name, the name of their special person and how they are feeling.
When the rain stick made its way to 10-year-old Grayson, he embraced it and bravely shared that his dad died from suicide and drugs. His open sharing completely shifted the environment and created a safe space for the rest of the kids. Most of the kids who followed Grayson in opening circle also shared how their special person died: from suicide, overdose, or homicide.
This 10-year-old boy led the way and created such a special moment of safety and compassion for kids and families who often feel judged in their grief because of how their special person died. But, not at Billy’s Place, a judgment-free zone.
